Stroll along the Beaches

The State of Yucatan has nearly 400 kilometers of beachfront property. In Mérida, the most popular beaches are Chelem, Yucalpetén, Progreso, Chicxulub, Cocal Josefina, San Miguel, Uaymitún, San Benito, San Bruno (these last two are not really towns, but they do have signs), Telchac Puerto, San Crisanto and Dzilam Bravo. River Lizards

Ría Lagartos is famous for its large colony of flamingos and a huge variety of birds. In short, this is a fantastic place for bird admirers.

It is located within the biosphere of the special reserve of the same name, to the north, on the Yucatecan coast in the Gulf of Mexico, just east of the neighboring state of Quintana Roo. It is a picturesque fishing village, with colorfully painted cement and wooden houses.

The area is protected by Semarnat in order to preserve its great diversity of flora and fauna, considered so important that in 1986 it was registered with the United Nations Organization as a wetland area of international importance. Hacienda Route

To spend a day exploring haciendas, start by driving south early in the morning to Umán, following the signs to Muna on Highway 261. Yaxcopoil is a hacienda where time stands still. Instead of renovating the buildings, the owner has simply stopped the deterioration. There you will see the large dining rooms and attractive rooms with high ceilings, original mosaic floors, and European furniture in each bedroom. Don't miss the Mayan museum, with its display of ancient ceramics and archaeological relics found on the land. At Hacienda Temozón Sur you will smell the sweet air and hear the birds of Temozón, the most palatial of all haciendas. The entrance leads up steps, past the unique dolphin head fountain, to the large terrace. If you are hungry, you can enjoy a delicious gourmet meal for a reasonable price. The service is impeccable, the food exceptional and the occasional sound of birds giving it an exotic feel. Hacienda Ochil is of as much historical interest as Yaxcopoil, but with the added delight of several craft shops. Here you can find master craftsmen teaching young people how to work with leather, stone, metals, wood and henequen. Hacienda Teya has been renovated with a modern restaurant, large enough to accommodate tour buses and events such as weddings.
