What to Do in Mérida?


Sunday: Mérida on Sunday. Open market, concerts fill the city center with a dreamy atmosphere from 9 AM to 9 PM, municipal crafts market.


Monday: Visit the Plaza Grande, churches, and the House of Crafts. Take the tourist bus at 10 AM, 1 PM, 4 PM, or 7 PM. Night: Regional Vaquería in front of the Municipal Palace at 9 PM.


Tuesday: Chichén-Itzá and the Balankanchén caves. Night: music from the big bands of the 1940s, Santiago Park, Calle 59 by 72 at 8:30 PM, or the Mexican watercolor at the University, Peón Contreras Theater, Calle 60 by 57.


Wednesday: Hacienda Teya, Izamal, or the Convent Route: Acanceh, Tecoh, Telchaquillo, Tekit, Mama, Chumayel, Maní, and Oxkutzcab. Night: University Folkloric Ballet, Peón Contreras Theater, 9 PM.


Thursday: Dzibilchaltún, Beaches: Progreso, Chelem. Chicxulub, Telchac, and X-Tampú ruins. Night: "La Serenata," at Santa Lucía Park, Calle 60 by 55. 9 PM.


Friday: Light show at the cathedral at 8:30 PM, Shopping, visit the Main and Lucas de Gálvez markets (the best). Picheta Passage (next to the square), craft shops on Calle 60. Night: Serenade in the central courtyard of the University, Calle 57 by 60. 9 PM.


Saturday: Loltun and the Puuc Route: Kabbah, Labna, Sayil, Xlapak, and Uxmal. Hacienda Yaxcopoil. Night: Mexican Fiesta Paseo Montejo & Calle 47 at 7:00 PM. Celestún.


Located 96 KM from Mérida heading west, this beautiful fishing port is truly picturesque. Celestún is famous not only for its seafood restaurants like La Palapa, located by the sea but also for the river, its beautiful flamingos, the freshwater spring, and its tranquil beaches.

River tours are arranged at the entrance of Celestún. Each boat carries 4 to 8 people, depending on the tide.
